Scientists have discovered an unexpected factor correlated with a longer life

When people want to live longer, they typically eat healthier food, exercise more and cut back on smoking and drinking. A new study shows they might want to add another item to that list: Read more books.

A new study shows it's not just good for your kids. It can also help adults to live longer.

A team at Yale University analyzed results of a survey that followed more than 3,500 adults, 50 or older, for about 12 years.

They found those that read three-and-a-half hours per week were 17 percent less likely to die within that 12-year period.

People who read more than that were 23 percent less likely to die.

The researchers believe reading can boost the connectivity of brain cells.

Book readers lived an average of almost two years longer than those who did not read at all.
Researchers also found a link between reading newspapers and living longer, but the correlation was not as strong.

“People who report as little as a half-hour a day of book reading had a significant survival advantage over those who did not read,” said the senior author, Becca R. Levy, a professor of epidemiology at Yale.
