World's First 'three parents' baby born in Mexico

A three-parent baby was born in Mexico, conceived using using a technique known as spindle nuclear transfer, where the nucleus of the mother's egg is transplanted into a donor egg with healthy mitochondria which has had its own nucleus removed.

As reported in the journal Fertility and Sterility, the use of this reproductive technology was intended to prevent Leigh syndrome, a severe neurological condition that affects the development of the nervous system

The method used – which took donor mitochondrial DNA and combined it with the mother’s nuclear DNA and the father’s sperm – is not approved in the United States, so  researchers Led by Dr. John Zhang, founder of the New Hope Fertility Center in New York City went to Mexico,
which is free of similar regulations.

The child, Abrahim Hassan was born to a couple from Jordan, Ibtisam Shaban and Mahmoud Hassan, who had been trying to start a family for almost 20 years.
His mother, Ibtisam Shaban carries genes for Leigh syndrome and caused the deaths of their first two children.
