Cambridge student burns £20 note in front of homeless man, expelled from Tory society

Cambridge university student has been filmed setting light to a £20 note in front of a homeless man on the city's streets.

The shocking footage shows the Pembroke College student dressed smartly in bow tie and tails using a cigarette lighter to burn the cash.

It is alleged the video, which has been shared on Snapchat, was filmed in the early hours of February 2.

During filming, the person recording the student's actions turns to capture a homeless person in shot.

The students says "some homeless shelter" and the video ends.

The Cambridge University Conservative Association (CUCA) has named the student as Ronald Coyne, their communications officer, and said it has now expelled him from the group.

A statement posted on Cambridge University Conservative Association's (CUCA) website said the "committee was made aware of the private behaviour of an individual member which we considered to be abhorrent and repugnant".

"We took immediate action to revoke his membership and expelled him from the association."
His actions were not representative of the group, it said.
Since the incident was publicised, Pembroke College has restricted comments on its official  Facebook Page.

A Cambridge University spokesman said the university did not comment on individual cases but added: "The University is committed to respecting the rights and dignity of all members of our community.

"We expect our students to treat others with respect, courtesy and consideration at all times, and the University takes allegations of unacceptable behaviour very seriously."
Ronald's mum, Sandra McLaughlin, 46, said she could not understand her son's behaviour.

Speaking from their family home in Livingston, West Lothian, she said: "I don't recognise that behaviour in my son.

"I don't really know why he's done something so thoughtless and cruel.
"It's completely out of character. He did two years of volunteering at Stockbridge shelter homeless shop in Edinburgh when he was still at school."
