Qatar Airways launches world’s longest commercial flight to Auckland

The world’s longest non-stop commercial flight has touched down in New Zealand after leaving Qatar 16 hours and 23 minutes earlier.

At 14,535km and with a flight time of about 17 hours (on the Auckland-Doha leg) the new route see Qatar Airways take over from rival Gulf carrier Emirates as the operator of the world’s longest flight.

Flight QR920 left Doha at 5:10am local time on Sunday morning.

Nearly 16 hours and 10 time zones later, it touched down in Auckland close to 11pm Qatar time on Monday night.

According to the airline, the flight is operated by four pilots and 15 cabin crew who serve around 1,100 cups of tea and coffee, 2000 cold drinks and 1036 meals during the flight.

The daily service provides a freight capacity of 116 cargo tonnes per week, equivalent to 1,162 sheep or 5,263 kiwifruit.
